This sucks!
« on: April 29, 2013, 10:59:21 PM »
Since mechanics-wise, the game has gotten better than ever, I'd like
to rant a bit about some small things that completely suck imho.
 :P

- Gold from Chests is ridicoulusly low, about 10-20.
- Warrior has no good option for the Spider quest reward. Book and
Bow are unusable for him and Venomblade has negligible damage.
- Shields are so powerfull (c'mon, Dragonscale Shield gives a couple
points more Defence than a suit of Platemail, plus a crazy chance to
block on top and magic resistance) that two-handed weapons become
obsolete. Especially Flails, which lack any kind of substance to them.
- Speed is the most important of stats and non-Rangers get shafted
really badly because of this.
- Burning can take 20 turns sometimes, that's insane!
- Bags of Treasure still give a lot of sucky items. It's more profitable
to just sell them and spare yourself the frustration in the long run.
- Shopkeeper only sales 2 keys at a time, too bad if you need 8 for
a single Crypt level sometimes.
- Training Grounds reset the Recall Depth.
 :(
If you remember the sprites from my avatar, know that you're awesome!

Thank you for the feedback! I've gone ahead and made adjustments to some of the things you mentioned here: http://dweller.lighthouseapp.com/projects/88670-dweller/milestones/current

I'll try to take a look at the rest tomorrow.

Wands. I just sell them. Need to be more powerful and less available.

Bosses are weak. They could use super powerful multiple-turn attacks: 'The Lich King Raises His Scepter." "The Lich King Casts Mass Life Drain."

No need to tell me when I am standing on a tree.

The forest doesn't need to random generate. It just makes finding those three mushrooms annoying. A nice, boring square forest would be appreciated.

Unless you could make other treasures hiding in the forest. Then that might be fun...

I don't understand why items dropped in water everyone can walk in disappear.

Why is there lava on early levels? Are we near hot springs or a volcano? I think lava should only generate on lower levels where it doesn't instantly kill you as you try to get that leather cap from the chest at the end of the lava.

More enemies need to teleport and/or heal. Especially vampires and black mages.

Add rare trinket -Magic Water bucket  -maybe a quest item- can be used to temporary Cool lava in a room for 2-10 turns - will you make it across? (and back?) or will you get burned. -give us a chance to avoid lava traps and give your room designer more leeway in lava room designs.

I guess I could add more ways of levitation/flying. The Celestial Armor is currently the only one.

1.24.17 has been released. It adresses some of the issues in this post.

FYI, there's also the Ring of Mobility for levitation. Some kind of
Scroll of Levitation (lasting till recall maybe?) would be a really
nice addition too.

I'm totally with malaprop on items dissapearing in water
(add dropping them down the staircase too), silly abundance of
wands and the Forest. Overworld could be a fixed-design level
with huts/ruins, etc. That'd be trading quantity of possibilities for
quality of a single solid design with decorations and stuff.

Simple example with a shop and tiny temple:

Note how there's a Skull Gate at the entrance, so that the Player
can use his Golden Key to chicken out.

I agree with the weapons. In the latest version almost any weapon is very weak compared to the short sword. Last year I used to play with two-handed weapons only, now I don't even pick them up. Compared to your starting weapon they all have ATK (0) or ATK (-1).

About the master keys: I never buy some. I use a broadsword or a battle axe to open doors :)

Hmm, I'm not sure how you come to your conclusion regarding the weapons:

Shortsword
Damage 5
Speed 90%
The shortword has a damage per time of 5 * 1 / 0.9 = 5.55

Battleaxe
Damage 8
Speed 135%
The battleaxe has a damage per time of 8 * 1 / 1.35 = 5.93. The battleaxe is only marginally better than a shortsword, but it hits multiple targets

Longsword
Damage 11
Speed 110%
The longsword has a damage per time of 11 * 1 / 1.1 = 10. It does almost twice the amount of damage of a shortsword

Note that I say "damage per time", but you might as well call it damage per second to make it analogous to most MMOs today. It's not damage per turn since the time it takes to make a turn varies depending on your own speed.

Now it's not all down to the amount of damage you can dish out in a given time. A fast weapon with a lower damage output than a heavy weapon with a higher damage output is sometimes preferable anyway, especially if the light weapon has some kind of on-hit effect such as fire. The more hits you can make within a certain time the more chances you have of applying the on-hit effect.

Hmm, that's strange. I just lost my weapon by an Orc attack and had to Scroll jump because my HP were low. I bought a new weapon at the store: Flail (0), Mace (0), Short Sword (0), Great Sword (0)...

Do you refer to the weapons not giving an attack bonus or do you mean something else by those zeros in parenthesis?

Yes, the attack bonus. Sorry that I accidentally said "damage" earlier. I mean, a short sword and a great sword should have different attack boni respectively should bigger and heavier weapons have a bonus at all. I think I remember it was like that in older versions, because I used to look for two-handed weapons early in the game while nowadays I don't care because they all have ATK bonus (0) unless they are enchanted or uniques.

A little thing about item's prices - if the item is of "lower tier",
it will be dirt cheap to buy or sell even if it's heavily enchanted
or an Artifact. I think there should be a fixed price modifier for
enchantments and Artifact status, like +500/1000.

Well, the attack stat on a weapon was used not only to increase the players effectiveness in combat, it was also used as a basis for damage calculations. This made it hard to balance weapons. Another problem with the old system was that I had to deduct the attack stat of the wielded melee weapon when I calculated the effect of a ranged attack.

The new system simplifies combat calculations. If you find an item that increases your attack stat the bonus is given to both melee and ranged attacks. And in the new system it is the damage stat that determines base damage for a weapon. The attack stat still contributes to the damage done: 1 point of Attack equals 1% extra damage (and 1 point of defense equals 1% damage reduction)
