Lucky, jinxed, climatic or weird situations.
« on: December 01, 2012, 04:16:59 PM »
I felt this board lacks a thread like this. A place to ramble and brag about lucky
or unlucky stuff that happened to your characters, maybe something odd or a
weird combination of events that you feel like sharing.

Here's a recent cascade of extremely lucky events with my new Wizard:
First of all, I checked the shop whether there was anything usefull to buy for
starters and what do I get? Elven shoes and a named Wizard's Staff with Poison
and Slow! Both of these would be 740 gold, far exceeding my initial funds, so I
decided to sell everything but my Robe and Scrolls of Recall, hoping to get a new
spellbook on one of the first levels.
Imagine my surprise when I got Black Book of Draining in my very first chest that
was just like 3 steps away from the entrance!
On the same level (first one!) I also got myself a Potion of Change and of Might
and also one of Wizardry. Plus a Scroll of Enchant that boosted my super-staff
to 4/4/9/2 (Poison, Slow, Light, Magic res).
Thru next 2 dungeon levels I have completed my gear with a Wizard's Hat and
Robe, Enchanted Prismatic Band and a Moonstone Pendant. A complete set of
books for every occasion (Dragon's Breath, Fire Sweep, Teleport, basic Firebolt)
followed.
Plus I vastly boosted my basic stats with another 2 quality Potions of Change.
 ;D

Woot! That's some luck there!

PS Your next few games will be a string of misfortunes after a game such as that one!

Not to worry, yesterday that Wizard has perished because apparently
70+ HPs is not enough against 2 plain Wraiths. I got hit 4 times in my
one move and received 15-26 damage with every hit...

i have noticed a change in game play,  in the past when you retrieved your weapon, no "time" passed, now it looks like it is taking "time" to pick it up as i am taking damage before and directly after retrieving the weapon... for the wizard this makes survival of a multiple foe attack almost impossible to survive.. my only move is to teleport away and wait until the foes move on so i can go back and retrieve weapon dropped.  -is this change intentional.

Yes, it's intentional. As mateusz has pointed out, the wizard feels really slow because of the cast speed being so long (not that it exactly has anything to do with picking up items though...)

crap - this can really stunt the effectiveness of the Wizard -if you pump up defense/speed and mana levels ( an absolute necessity given the slow cast speed) and leave your magic strength to a good weapon -you are screwed if you get disarmed.

:offtopic: IMHO wizard is hard and it should feel hard. Wizards are hard to play in every roguelike I've played so far, but they're fun also (and one of the reasons they are fun is the fact that they're like really hard to accend with)  :D

I had seen that Quest Warrior got killed by spider. I couldn't rescue him because of lack of master keys...

At first I didn't believe it, since it never happened before, but seems
like in 1.24.14 quest givers are flagged as valid targets for denizens
of the Dungeons! I've seen a Sewer Rat gnawing at the quest Ghost
for 2 damage to the point of 4/10 HPs before I rescued him!
 :o

This needs fixing.

The warrior prisoner should have been flagged as immortal, but I had forgotten to do that. The ghost is immortal and had it's HP reached 0 it would simply have been bumped back up to full HP again.

Few days ago I bought a pile of bones. I can even imagine an advertisment for this situation: 'Wealthy Merchant's store - the only place where you can buy pepole's bones! Only 1 coin per pile!'
I think you should reduce frequency of dropping Piles of bones to 0 to prevent selling corpses. They will drop even after that small change, because Piles are fixed drops.
YOLO! Trying to do low-level challenge.

I just had my best game ever this afternoon: After another disappointing labyrinth raid (the minotaur decided to stay home again this time, so I had no chance to steal his axe from his cold dead claws), I found the Goblin Mask. Woot! I went downstairs to the Goblin King while wearing the mask. I made him move to an empty room, took off my mask, killed him, put on his crown and went home like a boss, without having to deal with hordes of monsters! Was cool to see those Shamans and Wraiths gather around me without a clue :D

The minotaur may start moving about after a while, but he should always be generated.

Picking up another old thread to keep the forum alive: I got in an unlucky situation recently. I pushed a movable block into an open door. Behind the door was a chest, so the block got stuck in said door. No way to move the block again. Unfortunately, that door was the only way to the stairs down to the next level :D I collected plenty of wands and scrolls of teleport to get into that room but I failed.
