Little things to improve game interface
« on: November 14, 2012, 09:15:04 PM »
I just started playing as mage and was little disappointed, when I don't saw numeric indication of mana. How about to add numeric mana indication to bottom left corner and in to charater screen. Also how about to change 'gold' sign('g' in trading menus) to gold icon?
And the last thing: class description in charater screen/item destcription uses always/sometimes too many place on screen, as result we can't see charater/item stats, maybe there is need to place stats on the top and then description(now, when we want to see details of char/item first what we see is description and only than stats)?

Yes, the numeric mana indicator is a pain on smaller screens. Only way to see
it next to HPs is to switch on large tiles. You've propably also experienced books'
cast cost display in the quickslots only displaying the first digit in case of those
with a cost of 10+, again, using large tiles fixes that.

As for Character and items' stats, you can always scroll down with down/8.

I think this could use some attention.
I'd really like to see current/max mana display in the character screen. As for
spellbooks in quickslots, I'd say drop this useless first letter of their name and
give us small screen users full costs instead. Would be cool if books also used
their own graphics for each type and varied a bit more in palette, so there's no
more confusion when two of them share the same first letter and digit like with
Book of Transportation and Book of Dragon Breath both displaying B2 (with the
text obscuring so much of the actual graphic that it becomes hard to distinguish).
If you remember the sprites from my avatar, know that you're awesome!

Yup, I just saw it when i turned on large tiles, but its disaster to playing when you se twelve cells on the screen(3x4).

I would love to spell books displayed as icons in the quickslot.  I know I always mention powder but yeah... just like in powder
:P
I'm not too much of a stickler when it comes to a numerical mana display.  Usually I just look at the bar  to make sure I'm not getting too low

Yesterday in my head come some minds how to improve inventory. I've tried to draw it, so there it is.
Inventory screen

Sell window screen

Little explain

About item indication:
Artifact items - Items with own names(as great sword 'Morithien')
Unique items - Seven League Boots, Celestian armor of Jordan, Barbed Choker ect.

So what do you think about it, guys?

I think that's a very good mockup! I've been toying with the idea of switching from a list to a grid in the past, but never got around to implementing it. Maybe I should give it another try. I'd be interested in hearing some other opinions on your suggestion as well.

I like seeing all my stuff at one time lol.  this should go in as an option if implemented... inventory view list/grid.

Yeah, optional grid view would be nice, but even more that that,
a true graphical representation of equipable item slots. This will
surely make the game more appealing, since people are used to
inventory screen with silhouette of their character with various
boxes to put stuff in. Class specific slots would be greyed out for
members of other profession and 2-handed or ranged weapons
would also fill the off-hand slot, you know the drill.
 ;)

Yeah, that kind of visualization of equipment is nice, but it's also harder to make since I have to make it work with everywhere from 176x220 pixels up to today's full HD desktop screens.

I was just waiting till someone points out the difficulty of scaling such
inventory screen, hehe. What about making it generally square and
requesting display resolution to adjust the size multiplier depending
on the smaller dimension of the screen?

Like up to 319 pixels in smaller dimension, it would use the 160-pixel
wide screen (which would look good on both 240x320 and 176x220,
being 2/3 width with the first one and almost full width on the latter)
then at 320+ it would scale x2 untill 479 and at 480 and up it would
scale the inventory x3 and so on.

Yeah, I'd have to do some kind of dynamic scaling depending on resolution. Not impossible, not even hard, but it does take some time anyway

Hello, guys! I'm back with some new ideas of UI improvement (please don't kick me for my handmade  :D ).
So there it is!
First

Changes: removed icon of charater and added health and mana icons(it will be very useful for small screens, how we know on small screens we can't see numeric indication of mana), also status icons moved to bottom right corner(now we can see whats going on the upper cell right to charater).
And the second and last for today screen.

Changes here is: added text field with name and mana cost/charges indication of item in quick slot(if we can't see the full name of item in this text field we can use scrolling(from right to left and back :) ).
Thats all for now.

Bjorn, what about to add font size option(e.g. small, normal, large; it will be very useful for small screens)?

I really like these UI changes. I have been thinking of doing something similar. This will happen soon.
