High score list?
« on: September 26, 2012, 01:04:46 PM »
I got an e-mail from a player asking about implementing a high score list in Dweller. Those of you who have played the game for a while might remember old versions that actually contained a high score list. The score was based on xp and gold IIRC. I wasn't happy with how it worked out and removed the high score list. In a game such as Dweller it is hard to find a good way to judge if one game is better than another. Is the amount of XP gained an important factor, amount of gold, number of monsters killed, rare loot collected, percentage of levels explored, and so on...

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the topic. Should Dweller have a high score list or not? If so, what should the score be based on?

Online scores and profiles is a nice addition that could be thrown into the mix as well.

Well, with the current form of the game (infinite resources via shops and
monsters respawns, plus low difficulty not forcing the player to try and
run thru the game or certain levels asap), highscores are just a matter
of patience and "mmo grinding spirit".

What I suggest is adding the "total steps taken" to the equation and
dividing the total gold/xp/unique quests completed score by it.
Only problem would be finding the equilibrium between the two not to
encourage neither massive farming* nor quickruns**.

*exp per turn ratio is the best at GK and LK levels, so the player might
abuse this, especially having AoE spells.
** luck with finding proper gear early on would be a decisive factor here.
If you remember the sprites from my avatar, know that you're awesome!

Perhaps a few modes which address the issues that Mateusz brought up?  For instance, limiting supplies (or even a set amount from the get-go), harder monsters, no respawns, etc.  Maybe even combinations of these modes.  Then a player can choose which mode(s) they would like and have it reflected in the score.
