Merging Oozes
« on: July 31, 2012, 10:56:43 AM »
If you've played 1.20.5 you'll probably come across purple oozes. These don't split into smaller versions as the green ones do. Instead they merge/assimilate with other purple oozes and grow stronger. When they merge with another ooze they add the stats of the other ooze to their own. Right now they aren't lethal enough unless you find them in a large pack in which case you can end up with a pretty dangerous strong, resilient and fast ooze. The question is if they should be allowed to assimilate any other weaker creature or only other purple oozes? Your thoughts please!

To be honest, I haven't seen them merge at all, because they get
instantly killed with such low stats. I think it'd be nice if they were
only spawned together with green ones and could assimilate those
as well.

Hell, make them assimilate Rats, Bats and Goblins too! Just please
introduce certain cap as a failsafe mechanism so we don't get like
superoozes with stats of 50 across the board lol.
 ;)

Overall great design idea, they're just too weak and unreliable on
their own for now.

About purple oozes: is very easy to kills them because they have low HP and assimilate frequency is bad  . Increase purple ooze HP and assimilate frequency is my suggestion.

About assimilate other weaker monster: Good idea!

if you allow them to assimilate "remains" bone & blood spots, other dead oozes that would be better - you would never leave one alone on a level as by the time you found it again it could be a super ooze.

how about letting them snag dropped items as well and assimilate that?  I was pleasantly surprised to run into the purple oozes this last trek down to see GK...

This game never ceases to amaze with something new every time I play.  I've also noticed there are a ton of custom/user created items which is also really cool... my recent favorite is the five stringed bow of ...somebody(forgot the name)... cool item cept I couldnt use it due to my strict wizardness.  I've been trying to figure out what artifact I want to add...
When in doubt.  Scroll of Recall

I think I figured out what's the problem with those new oozes.
They just don't look for other purple ones. I had 2 of those
literally 2 tiles away from each other and both attacking me -
they used up all their turns to try and attack and not a single
one to try and get closer to each other.

This alone makes the merging a very rare occurence because
these oozes have to stand next to each other. Another thing
is they either have a low chance of attempting to merge or
won't even try until some conditions are met. To make things
worse, I'm pretty sure they only try to run when on low HPs
and with starting 10 and abysmal Defence its very easy to
bring them low thus denying a chance of merging altogether.

Best solution imho would be to make them try to move closer
to each other and merge untill they're the only purle ooze
around (in their FoV that is) Only then should they move in to
attack the player. This way the system ensures maximum
challenge and is most demanding for the player who'd want
to dispatch them quickly before they get really nasty.

I like the idea. The purple ooze is pretty. Maybe to get them to merge more often they could move toward other oozes rather than attack. Also, taking on other monsters could make it way fun. Good one bjorn
