Title: Hebrew translation
Post by: swooboo on December 21, 2012, 10:21:32 AM
Not sure I want to open this pandorica, but here it is.. I am fluent Hebrew speaker,
but I will not be fully translating, as I seem to be committed to Russian. Also, Hebrew
always is problematic, as we write right-to-left. Is anyone up to challenge? I might
try to convince my gf to do it, but it might be hard.

Wow! I'm sure there aren't that many games that are translated to Hebrew. That in and of itself would be reason enough to do it! But the whole right to left thing would most likely be problematic?

Oh yes.

Hebrew is always a problem. It's a right-to-left language, and it will always be problematic.
All the researches in the university (we talk about math and computer science) are in English.
One of the reasons: Hebrew is rtl, while math expressions are ltr. Also, LaTeX doesn't
support Hebrew the way it should I think.

Anyway, I think my gf will be up to it, if I try really hard to persuade her. She is not so much
into Dweller, but she does laugh when 'incubus murmurs into your ear' in NetHack... Maybe
we should add sex to Dweller as well?   ;) How do we start?

I need to figure out how to deal with right to left text handling first. How would you expect text alignment to work in a right to left scenario? Would a multiline text be right aligned in a right to left language?

I'm pretty positive it should be right-aligned. For example:

"The sewer rats in the dungeon are
starting to become a nuisance. Please
kill some for me."

==>

"חולדות הביוב בצינוק
מתחילות להפוך למטרד.
אנא להרוג כמה בשבילי."

I hope that the forum supports rtl hebrew text formatting.

P.S. Nope, it doesnt. Just imagine the periods are in the end of the line. Also, notice how compact
hebrew actually is (no vowels)

My gf and sister are up to challenge to translate dweller into Hebrew. So whenever you feel
like taking on a challenge, open a Hebrew translation, and they will try to fill it as they can.
By the way, my sister has a strong affinity for languages, I will not be surprised if she will be
a pro translator one day.

Ok, let's give it a try! I've added Hebrew as a target language on Gengo. Please tell your sister and girlfriend to register and apply for translation status for the project!
